Come join us Friday, September 4th, at 10:00 am to help us clean out the Purple Martin gourds! By the end of the nesting season the gourds can get quite dirty so we will do some volunteer work to clean them out and see what Purple Martin nests look like after fledging. Be sure to bring your questions about managing the Purple Martin towers! We will meet at the B&O Headquarters located at 205 S Mill Street in Lexington. Entry Fee: $10 per minnow (50% of fees go to charity, 50% go to the winner).
What to Bring: Just yourself, your racing spirit, and some cash for entry fees. We’ll provide all the minnows, straws, and racing tracks.
How to Works: Minnows are placed into 10′ long “swim lanes”. The minnow jockeys (i.e. our contestants) use a straw and blow into the water to motivate their minnow down the track.
The minnow that crosses the finish line first wins the heat. Each entrant will be placed in a tournament bracket and go head-to-head with other contestants.
There is no age limit for the Minnow Races and all are welcome!

Then come join Luke Donahue at the B&O Trail Headquarters to learn a little about all the conservation work being done at the 1-acre site and watch the Purple Martins feeding their young! Meet at 205 South Mill Street in Lexington, at 7:30 pm, and watch the martins with us for 1½ – 2 hours. The 19th Annual Bobolink Festival is a free, family-friendly outdoor event celebrating birds, nature, and community engagement in Ashland County. Co-sponsored by local organizations, including the Ashland County Parks District, the festival offers interactive educational stations, guided bird walks, wildlife experiences, and hands-on activities designed to connect attendees with the natural world.
The event highlights local bird species such as bobolinks, bluebirds, tree swallows, and purple martins, while also featuring pollinators, nature photography, and conservation education. Guests can enjoy a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere with opportunities to learn, explore, and participate in activities for all ages.
Additional features include a live animal show, a childrenâs puppet show, raffle prizes (including binoculars), and a casual lunch with burgers, hot dogs, and refreshments available by donation. Informational signage, maps, and staffed check-in areas help guide attendees throughout the experience.
